AI Development Services
AI development services cover the design, build and integration of artificial-intelligence software — from a single automated workflow to multi-agent systems — into a business’s existing systems and data. At York Apps we build the working software, not the slide deck: the automations, agents and integrations that do a real job inside a real business, under rules and approvals you control.
This is for UK businesses that already run on software — a CRM, Microsoft 365, an accounting package, a bespoke database — and want AI working with that data rather than beside it. Every project is scoped and priced individually, and most engagements start with a short, fixed-fee AI consultancy so you spend on discovery before you commit to a build.
What are AI development services?
AI development services are the specialist design and build work that turns a general-purpose language model into software that performs a specific business task reliably. That means connecting the model to your data, wrapping it in rules and approval gates, testing it against real cases, and integrating it with the systems your team already uses.
It is a distinct discipline from buying an off-the-shelf AI tool. A tool gives you a generic capability; development gives you software shaped to your process, your data and your compliance obligations. The two most common shapes are automation (multi-step processes that run themselves under human approval) and agents (software that decides and acts towards a goal).
What can AI actually do for a business like yours?
The useful question is never “what can AI do?” but “which of your repeatable, well-documented processes could it take on first?” The candidates are usually the same across most businesses:
- Email and document triage — classifying, routing and drafting replies for review, not sending them blind.
- Quoting and follow-up — assembling a quote from your price rules, chasing it on a schedule.
- Data entry between systems — reading a document, updating a database or CRM, flagging the exceptions.
- Knowledge lookup — answering staff or customer questions from your own documents, with citations.
- Customer contact — website chat and voice handling that escalates cleanly to a person.
What AI cannot yet do well is anything requiring regulatory judgement, or any irreversible action taken without a human check. We design for that limit rather than against it — the AI does the reading, sorting and drafting; a person keeps the decision that matters.
Our AI development process
Every project moves through the same five stages, in order. The point of the sequence is that autonomy is earned — the software proves itself under supervision before it runs on its own.
- Discovery — we map the process, the data it touches and what “good” looks like. Usually a fixed-fee consultancy engagement.
- Data readiness — we check the data the AI will rely on is accessible, clean enough and permissioned correctly.
- Build — we develop the workflow, agent or integration against real cases, not toy examples.
- Supervised launch — it runs in parallel with your existing process, every output reviewed, every failure logged.
- Graduated autonomy — once it performs consistently inside a narrow scope, we widen the scope step by step.
What does AI development cost in the UK?
Cost depends far more on scope and data readiness than on the AI itself. A single, well-bounded automation is inexpensive to build and cheap to run; a multi-system integration with audit and compliance requirements is a larger project. Because scope varies so much, we price each engagement individually:
| Engagement | What you get | Pricing |
|---|---|---|
| AI consultancy | Use-case shortlist, readiness assessment, costed roadmap | Fixed fee — on request |
| Single workflow / automation | One multi-step process automated, human-in-the-loop | Quoted per project |
| AI agent or integration | Goal-driven agent or AI connected to a live system | Quoted per project |
| Multi-agent / multi-system build | Coordinated agents across several systems, with audit | Quoted per project |
Running costs (model usage, hosting) are separate and usually modest relative to the labour saved. We size them with you during discovery so there are no surprises. For a fuller breakdown, see our guide on how much AI development costs in the UK.
Why York Apps — we run this on our own operations
York Apps is a UK software agency with 25 years of building bespoke systems, custom databases and integrations for businesses that outgrew off-the-shelf tools. That heritage matters more for AI work than it looks: the hard part of AI in a real business is rarely the model — it is connecting it safely to messy, existing systems, which is exactly the discipline we have practised for two decades.
We also run AI on our own operations — self-hosted automation handling parts of our own admin, triage and follow-up under human approval. When we recommend a pattern, it is usually one we use ourselves, and we can show you how it behaves in practice rather than in a demo.
Recent examples
- Steelwork & ducting manufacturer: cut quote generation from 2.5 days to 2 hours.
- Biomedical equipment supplier: reduced average support-request handling time by 58%.
- Sheffield telecoms company: increased sales appointments by 7% with an enriched-data system.
Technologies we work with
We are not tied to one vendor. We choose the model and stack that fit the job, the budget and your data-residency needs — including self-hosted options where privacy demands it. In practice that means Claude and OpenAI models, Azure OpenAI for Microsoft-aligned estates, the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and RAG for connecting AI to your own knowledge, n8n for self-hosted automation, and deep integration with Microsoft 365 and line-of-business systems.
Frequently asked questions
What does an AI development company do?
It designs, builds and integrates AI software for a specific business need — connecting a language model to your data and systems, wrapping it in rules and approvals, testing it, and maintaining it. That is different from selling you a subscription to a generic AI tool.
How much does AI development cost?
A single automated workflow is the cheapest starting point; integrated, multi-system builds cost more. We price each project individually, and most clients begin with a fixed-fee consultancy so the build is costed against a clear scope before any commitment.
How long does an AI project take?
A bounded first workflow can be live in a few weeks; larger integrations take longer. The biggest variable is data readiness, not development time — clean, accessible data is what accelerates a project.
Do we need our data sorted out first?
Not fully, but the state of your data drives cost and timeline. Part of our discovery is a data-readiness check, and where data needs work we scope that honestly rather than discovering it mid-build.
Who owns the code and prompts?
You do. We build software for you to own — code, prompts, and configuration — with no lock-in to us.
